Microelectronics UK 2025 brought together engineers, researchers, and product leaders at ExCeL London for two days, focused on the future of semiconductors, embedded systems, and photonics.
The event offered more than just updates; it provided a practical look at the challenges facing electronics teams today: supply chain uncertainty, the strain of running AI at the edge, and rising pressure to design with sustainability and serviceability in mind.
For Ardencraft, it was an opportunity to connect, exchange knowledge, and identify patterns that are shaping product development in 2025.

Four Themes That Came Through Clearly
Across sessions and informal conversations, these four topics were the most frequently discussed by attendees working in development, manufacturing, and strategy roles:
1. Supply Chains Are Being Rethought
Recent disruptions continue to push companies to reconsider where and how they source components. The risks of over-reliance on single suppliers came up often, along with interest in supply chains that balance cost, flexibility, and regional resilience.
2. AI at the Edge Is Changing Hardware Requirements
Edge devices, from wearables to industrial systems, are now expected to handle processing tasks previously done in the cloud. This shift is introducing new design constraints related to power efficiency, security, and latency management. Many teams are updating their hardware platforms to match these changing demands.
3. Sustainability Is a Product Expectation
Several speakers highlighted the need for longer product lifecycles, repairable enclosures, and the use of modular and recyclable materials. Environmental considerations are now part of early-stage design discussions, driven by both regulation and customer expectation.
4. Skills Gaps Are Slowing Progress
With increasing specialisation, particularly in areas like embedded security and edge AI, many companies noted they’re struggling to hire engineers with the right experience. This is creating a stronger demand for external partners who can provide reliable support and technical insight.
Where Ardencraft Fits In
Each of these themes aligns closely with the work we do.
Building Reliable, Balanced Supply Chains
Ardencraft supports product teams by combining UK and European design capabilities with established manufacturing networks in Asia. This approach offers cost-effective production without compromising oversight or quality.
Supporting Edge and IoT Development
We work on projects involving connected devices, low-power systems, and embedded security, helping partners address the hardware needs that come with running AI and analytics at the edge.
Designing for Longevity and Sustainability
Whether it’s plastic-free packaging, modular boards, or repairable layouts, we aim to make sustainability practical, not just aspirational.
Bridging Capability Gaps
Our team brings engineering expertise across prototyping, compliance (CE/UKCA), and production planning. We often work alongside internal teams to move projects forward without adding long-term headcount.
“It’s helpful to be in a space where our day-to-day work lines up closely with what the industry is asking for. That’s where partnerships start to make sense.”
Entering Chinese Manufacturing with Confidence
Many of the supply chain concerns raised at the event are addressed in our book: Entering Chinese Manufacturing with Confidence
This book is based on direct experience, covering the missed steps and assumptions that often cause delays or unexpected costs.
