Most conversations about manufacturing in China happen far from the factory floors, and most times, they are through assumptions or secondhand information.
This one is different.
It was recorded in a car, on the way to a factory, with YC. YC is an R&D manager with Ardencraft who has spent over 20 years working in Chinese manufacturing. The discussion was a little unplanned, just two colleagues talking through what’s changed, what hasn’t, and what still surprises people who visit for the first time.
Topics covered in this short drive:
Why some global companies are stepping back from India
How “quality” is understood and applied differently in Chinese factories
The value of long-term relationships in reducing risk and recalls
What presence in China actually looks like
How time spent in the factories shapes expectations in a way that documents can’t
YC shares his experience plainly. He did not withhold his candid observations based on years of daily decisions and problem-solving inside factories.
There’s some background noise because it was recorded on the road, but if you work with suppliers in China or plan to, it’s worth a listen.
This first episode focuses on quality, working culture, and factory relationships. The next one will touch on tariffs, pace of change, and what it takes to operate in China today.
